Partnership Champions Circular Plastics Economy

THE WOODLANDS – Tuesday, Jan. 28 – AmSty announces today it is a founding member of the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA), formed in partnership with the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS).

PSRA brings together polystyrene (PS) industry and expandable polystyrene (EPS) industry stakeholders to create a roadmap and action steps to achieve "widely recyclable" status for polystyrene.

"This is an historic alliance and a unique organization uniting the PS and EPS industries to champion a circular plastics economy," said Dr. Randy Pogue, AmSty President & CEO. "AmSty is pleased to have played a critical role in leading the establishment of this collaboration over the past year."

AmSty is joined by other manufacturers, as well as brands, converters and recyclers, to achieve PSRA's mission. Richard Shaw, AmSty director of sustainability and circular economy, has been pivotal in creating the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance and was elected by members as chair of the organization.

"Polystyrene is an essential material that provides numerous life-enhancing benefits, and a favorable carbon footprint compared to other materials," said Shaw. "Our focus is to expand end-of-life recycling options for all types of polystyrene through strategic investments and partnerships with other stakeholders committed to a circular plastics economy."

In partnership with experts at Resource Recycling Systems, PSRA established a comprehensive roadmap to guide its efforts. Initial data indicates that one in three Americans currently have access to recycle one or more types of polystyrene. With ongoing and planned industry investments in recycling capacity, PSRA expects recycling access for several polystyrene formats and applications to approach "widely recyclable" status by 2030.

"By boosting recycling access and recycling rates, our industries will give consumers and brands the confidence that PS and EPS products are being recycled in a sustainable way," said Tim Barnette, vice president of polymers and sustainability at AmSty. "The alliance gives us the avenue to tackle industry challenges and bring needed awareness to sustainable, circular solutions for the materials that are valuable to our everyday lives."
