AmSty Presents Conversion Recycling Data at Foam Expo in Michigan

The Woodlands, Texas – Arpil 10, 2018 – AmSty shows continued commitment to polystyrene sustainability and circular solutions for every type of plastic with its involvement in conversion recycling efforts. AmSty Senior Manager - Innovation and Sustainability, Jon Timbers, presented current data as well as a plan for wide-scale conversion recycling to an audience at Foam Expo on March 8 in Novi, Michigan.

To date, the industry has focused largely on mechanical recycling. Mechanically recycled plastic works great in many applications, but typically has some performance loss. This change in performance makes finding markets for recycled plastics the largest barrier to plastic recycling growth. Conversion recycling, sometimes called chemical recycling or plastics-to-feedstocks, returns the quality of recycled polystyrene to a pure polymer state. This eliminates the need to find new markets. Conversion recycled plastics to go back into the same use as virgin material.

Last August AmSty announced an agreement with Agilyx, a conversion recycling company in Tigard, Oregon, to receive and process transformed post-consumer polystyrene at the AmSty styrene monomer facility in St. James, Louisiana. The long-term goal of the program is to effectively turn previously discarded material into an all-new polystyrene resin without degrading its quality or value. This process could be a revolutionary success for the entire plastics industry and will strengthen the long-term outlook for conversion recycling.

According to the Foam Expo website, the event was “North America's first free-to-attend exhibition and conference for the technical foam industry.” Mr. Timbers currently oversees AmSty’s product innovation and sustainability efforts. He also holds a B.S.E in Chemical Engineering and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan.
