Polystyrene Foam Recycling Grant Recipients Awarded

The Woodlands, Texas – August 21, 2015 – Nearly $100,000 has been awarded to grant recipients this year through a partnership between AmSty and The Foam Recycling Coalition (“FRC”). The Foam Recycling Grant program, which is partially underwritten by AmSty and led by the FRC, is intended to fund infrastructure improvements for polystyrene foam recycling. The grant specifically targeted facilities that handle products considered difficult to recycle, such as foam cups, clamshells, meat trays, and egg cartons.

The first grant of $45,000 was awarded earlier this year to Alpine Waste & Recycling of Commerce City, Colorado, located in the Denver Metro area. Alpine designated the funds for the purchase polystyrene foam compactors, called densifiers. The densifiers are part of a larger $5MM investment to upgrade the facility. According to the company website, the facility has more than doubled its ability to process single-stream recycling materials. Thanks to this grant, residents and businesses throughout the Denver Metro area will soon be tossing used foam products into their recycling bins.

A second recipient, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, was awarded $50,000, which it also plans to use for the purchase of polystyrene foam densifying equipment. Once recovered, the foam will be processed in Kemptown, Nova Scotia. Its location near the Trans-Canada Highway allows the Kemptown facility to provide processing for neighboring municipalities.

According to Lynn Dyer, President of the Foodservice Packaging Institute, “Colchester demonstrated to us a strong desire and commitment to recycle foam, which is exactly what we're looking for from our grant winners," said Dyer. "In particular, their customer communications and outreach plans will highlight how easy it is to recycle and process foam." AmSty's Senior Manager - Business Development, Manuel Kerguelen added, "It's exciting to see an increased emphasis on foam recycling. We hope news about these upgraded recycling facilities will bring to light the benefits of recycling polystyrene products."
