AmSty Receives OSHA Awards for Safety Excellence
The Woodlands, Texas – May 20, 2015 – The AmSty St. James Styrene Monomer Plant has earned two awards from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The plant received the Region VI Regional Administrator’s Award and the Star of Excellence Award in recognition for its outstanding safety performance in 2014. This is the second consecutive year that the St. James plant has received the Region VI Regional Administrator’s Award. The facility has been designated as a "Star" site, the highest honor in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs, since 1997.
The Star of Excellence award is awarded only to the highest achieving facilities in OSHA’s Region VI. The safety recognition is part of a program for plants in the OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). It is awarded only to facilities with a single-year injury incident rate that is 90 percent below the national average.
OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs recognize worksites that demonstrate excellence in workplace safety and health, and honor companies who are committed to protecting employees beyond standard OSHA requirements. VPP sites like the St. James plant develop systems to help identify and prevent employee incidents.
AmSty has received a number of other safety awards as well. The company was named Best in Louisiana for three consecutive years (2012-2014) by the Louisiana Chemical Association for excellent safety performance at its St. James Styrene Monomer Plant, and its Joliet Plant in Illinois was recognized for its injury-free performance by the Three Rivers Manufacturers Association. The St. James and Joliet plants have reached four and five year anniversaries with no recordable injuries, and the company’s polystyrene plant in Cartagena, Colombia has achieved six years with no recordable injuries. The Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC) also recently recognized the AmSty Hanging Rock facility for exceptional performances in environmental, health, safety and security.
